Plain City Public Library
The beautiful Library facility that serves our community is the result not only of the planning and dedication of the Board of Trustees, but of the generosity of many people, through bequests and gifts.
The story of the library starts over sixty years ago. In 1944, the Plain City Book Club sponsored a new library to be located in Plain City and to function as a branch of the Marysville Public Library. Book Club members worked tirelessly to make the new library a success and support the Library to this day with a yearly book donation. The Library was originally located on the northeast corner of E. Main and N. Chillicothe Streets and moved to the Anderson Building at 245 West Main Street in July of 1962.
In 1971, the library received a bequest from the late Richard M. (Jack) Watson. Because of Mr. Watson's generosity and the wise investments made by the Trustees, a 5400 square foot facility was built and when completed in December of 1981, was debt-free. A 1995 bequest from Dorothy Grace Tagert in memory of her mother became the foundation for the new children's wing, meeting rooms and kitchenette which were added in 1996. The 4200 square foot addition was completed without asking taxpayers for additional money.
The Friends of the Library purchased furnishings for the new reading alcove as well as a refrigerator and microwave for the new kitchenette. Family and friends of the late Edwin McCabe generously donated time, effort and money to the creation of the McCabe Reading Garden.
A podium and reference desk was provided by donations in memory of Frank Thomas who served as Library Trustee for many years. In 1995 the Library was awarded a matching funds grant from the State Library and used those funds to offset the costs of automation.
In 2006, some much needed interior updates were made possible through the generosity of the Ernestine Eversole estate, the Jane Taylor estate, the Plain City Lion's Club, the Della Selsor trust, the Plain City Historical Society, Jonathan Alder High School art student volunteers, the Friends of the Plain City Public Library, and numerous library patrons who made monetary and material contributions to help enrich their library.
